Lipari

Lipari is the largest island of the Aeolian archipelago with an area of 37.6 square kilometers and is 24 nautical miles from the Sicilian coast.

Its inhabitants are called, Liparesi or Liparoti, which are about 9000 and live in the surroundings of the island: Canneto, Acquacalda, Quattropani and Pianoconte. With the exception of Salina, all the other islands are under the jurisdiction of Lipari.

As all the Aeolian archipelago, Lipari has a volcanic origin. The oldest part of the island is the western part where about 160 thousand and 1340 thousand years ago, 12-layers of volcanoes were identified, including the Timponi. At this stage of intense eruptions followed a long break in volcanic activity. In the second period, about 100 thousand years ago, the stratified-volcano of Mount St. Angel was created. The volcanoes of the third period (40 thousand to 8 thousand years ago) erupted pumice and formed a series of domes, such as Monte Guardia and Monte Giardina.

After a long pause, the eruptive activity resumed in the North East with the launch of huge amounts of pumice, which formed Monte Pelato, and the issuance of the Rocche Rosse obsidian (eighth century AD).

Even in historic times there were eruptions of pumice that covered with a thin layer of pumice levels in the oldest archaeological Diana and in the Castle of the Acropolis. The current volcanic activity is evidenced by fumaroles and hot springs, as well as large amounts of pumice and obsidian, scattered along the coast of the island of Lipari.
